The Khewra Salt Mines, situated in Khewra, north of Pind Dadan Khan, are Pakistan’s largest and oldest salt mines and the second largest in the world. These mines are not just a source of natural salt but a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over the globe.

A Glimpse into the Past

The history of the Khewra Salt Mines dates back to 320 BC when Alexander the Great’s troops discovered the site. Interestingly, the mine was not discovered by Alexander himself or his allies but by his army’s horses, which were found licking the stones. The mine began trading during the Mughal era, marking the start of its journey as a significant source of salt.

Location and Accessibility

Khewra Salt Mine is situated in the Pind Dadan Khan Tehsil of Jhelum District, approximately 200 km from Islamabad and Lahore. The mine is easily accessible via the M2 motorway, about 30 kilometers off the Lilla interchange. As you travel towards Pind Dadan Khan on the Lilla road, you’ll find the mine entrance, which is about 945 feet above sea level and extends about 2400 feet into the mountain.
